As a designer at heart, I am always on the lookout for inspiration – inspiration for color, for propping, for catalog themes. Often that means taking the time to pop into a new boutique or museum, road side fruit stand – the Farmer’s market. Everything around us is fair game to freshen up the day-to-day & spark a new idea. So from time to time, I’ll share my favorite stops along the way to the office in Portland.
This week I made a detour to hit an old favorite, Ink & Peat home + floral on Mississippi. Despite the clouds outside, it felt like a bright summer afternoon inside.

Hi Shelly,
This is so funny. I was just telling my daughter (27) just the other day how growing up in East Los Angeles in the 50′s we had Helms Bakery trucks that would come down out neighbor street. I don’t remember if it was a whistle or a tune, but would stop when we ran out to the curb. The driver would open the back doors of the truck and pull out the little drawers displaying all of the baked goods. Then, if you wanted a donut, would grab a thin sheet of waxed paper and wrap it around the donut then hand it to you. I am 62 now and still remember that the chocolate, glazed donuts were my absolute favorite. Rejuvenation acquiring the old Helms Bakery building reminds me of how now McMinamins, based out of Portand, is coming to Bothell and turning one of our old schools into a hotel and restaurant. Your article and photos bring back so many fond memories of growing up in the 50′s. Thank you so much, Peggy
