The USS Mellena (Golden Bear I) which served California Maritime Academy from 1946 to 1970, never had the fiberglass bears on the stacks. CMA took its blue smokestack with two gold stripes surrounding a golden bear from Pacific Far East Lines, a shipping company which went defunct in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Prior to PFEL's demise, CMA had a ship's wheel painted on the 'stack of the training ship (Golden Bear II). Golden Bear I (USS Mellena) had two buff smokestacks with blue tops, and the school's crest was painted on the aft stack.

It's possible that your bear came from TSGB II (ex-Delorleans, ex-USS Crescent City), but more likely that it came from one of many Pacific Far East Lines ships, many (if not all) of which had "Bear" in their names.
